Mission: Impossible Director Responds To Superman Movie Proposal

Mission: Impossible’s Christopher McQuarrie responds to a fan proposing he direct James Gunn’s new Superman movie with a Pom Klementieff joke.

Christopher McQuarrie responds to a fan saying he should direct the new Superman movie. The past few months have been both a time of excitement and controversy for the rebranded DC Studios ever since James Gunn and Peter Safran were named co-CEOs. For their first major announcement regarding their vision for the new DCU (formerly known as the DCEU), Gunn revealed that Henry Cavill would not be returning as Superman despite Black Adam’s post-credits scene. Instead, a new Superman movie focused on a younger version of the character is planned.

Gunn is writing the new Superman movie and while he could be a candidate, potential directors are unknown at this time. A fan recently reached out to Christopher McQuarrie on Twitter and suggested he direct the new Superman movie (or something else for DC). The director, who is currently working on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, responded to the fan with a Pom Klementieff joke, which prompted a reply from the actress herself.

McQuarrie is best known for his various collaborations with Tom Cruise, especially in the increasingly ambitious Mission: Impossible franchise. He was first brought on board 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol for some uncredited rewrites, and later returned to direct 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and 2018’s Mission: Impossible < Fallout. The franchise’s most recent installment starred Henry Cavill as the primary antagonist, August Walker.

Soon after collaborating with Cavill on Mission: Impossible < Fallout, there were reports that McQuarrie was being eyed as a potential director for Man of Steel 2. In the past, McQuarrie has also been attached to a Green Lantern Corps. movie for DC, though neither project ever materialized. For the brief time after Black Adam’s post-credits scene when it was believed that Cavill was returning to the role, McQuarrie was once again floated as a potential director for Man of Steel 2.

Due to the revelation that Gunn is writing a new Superman movie, McQuarrie’s name is once again being tossed around as a potential director. Other than a joke acknowledging that Klementieff stars in both Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy as Mantis and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two in an undisclosed role, McQuarrie’s comment does suggest he would be open to collaborating with the new DC head in the future, whether that be the Superman movie or another project. Only time will tell when Gunn and Safran detail their new DCU slate early next year.
